Living with Purpose: Embracing Your Multiple Passions
While many people try to find their ‘one true calling,’ life isn’t always that simple. Many of us are blessed (and sometimes challenged) with multiple passions and interests.
This can sometimes feel like a burden when everyone around us is insisting we niche down. Yet, it can be a blessing when it leads to unique combinations and innovations that wouldn’t be possible with a single focus.
Figuring out what exactly your purpose in life is. It’s a pretty big question, isn’t it? Hard for most anyone to narrow it down to one thing. Even harder for multi-passionates.
I wish I had just the right answer for you, but the truth is that our life’s purpose is different for all of us. There is no quiz you can take that spits out the answer. It’s something you have to discover for yourself. And discovering it can take time, trial, and error.
I do however have a few thoughts to share with you that will guide you along the way. In the end, your purpose is very much like true love. You will know it when you’ve found it.
What Are You Passionate About?
Start by writing out a list of all your different passions – and don’t hold back! Multi-passionate people often discover that their different interests support and enrich one another in surprising ways.
Maybe you’re passionate about both technology and teaching, or perhaps you combine your love of art with environmental activism.
List everything that sparks your interest, no matter how disconnected these passions might seem. It could be restoring old cars, redecorating your home, sewing historical costumes, or all of the above.
Finding the Threads
Look for common themes among your different passions. Perhaps several of them involve helping others, creating things, solving problems, or expressing ideas. These underlying patterns can help you understand your core skills while still honoring all your interests.
For example, someone passionate about both cooking and photography might realize their core theme is creating beautiful experiences for others.
What Do You Value?
Another approach is examining your various values. Multi-passionate people often hold multiple core values that drive different aspects of their lives. List all your values without trying to narrow them down to just one. Do any of your interests listed above align with your values?
What Elicits A Strong Emotional Response?
Pay attention to the things that stir your emotions. As a multi-passionate person, you might feel strongly about several seemingly unrelated issues or activities. Having an emotional responses to things are valuable clues to purpose and passions. Instead of forcing yourself to choose just one, consider how these different emotional drivers might complement each other.
What’s Fun?
Joy is a key sign for identifying your true passions. Pay attention to the activities that make you lose track of time or feel energized.
You might enjoy analyzing data as much as teaching yoga, or in my case, geek out about audio engineering and love creating art of various sorts. People with multiple passions often feel more balanced and fulfilled when they pursue various interests rather than just one.
Of course not every aspect of what you do will be fun. Overall though, you want to find projects that have you excited to jump out of bed in the morning. And you’re in good company – many successful individuals throughout history have found ways to pursue multiple passions while making significant contributions to the world.
Multi-Passionate Success Stories
History and modern times are filled with successful individuals who embraced their multiple passions rather than choosing just one path. Their stories show us how diverse interests can create unique opportunities and innovations:
Maya Angelou: Beyond her renowned poetry and writing, she was also a dancer, actress, civil rights activist, and professor. Rather than choosing one pursuit, she let each passion inform and enrich the others, creating a profound impact through multiple channels.
Leonardo da Vinci: The quintessential Renaissance man combined art, engineering, anatomy, and architecture. His diverse interests didn’t dilute his genius – they enhanced it. His understanding of anatomy improved his paintings, while his artistic skills made his scientific illustrations more precise.
Padma Lakshmi: Known primarily as a food expert and TV host, she’s also a model, actress, author, and activist for women’s rights and immigration. She demonstrates how multiple passions can evolve into a personal brand that encompasses various interests while maintaining authenticity.
Jeff Goldblum: While most know him as an actor, he’s also an accomplished jazz pianist who regularly performs with his band. He shows how maintaining a passion alongside a primary career can provide balance and creative fulfillment.
More Examples:
- Susan Cain: The author of “Quiet” combines her legal background, writing skills, and passion for understanding introverts to create meaningful change in how society views personality types.
- Brian May: The Queen guitarist is also an astrophysicist who earned his PhD in physics. He regularly combines his love of music with his passion for science in public education efforts.
- Ken Jeong: Maintained his medical license even after becoming a successful actor and comedian, showing how different passions can coexist even in seemingly unrelated fields.
These individuals teach us several valuable lessons:
- You don’t have to choose just one path
- Different passions can unexpectedly complement each other
- Success often comes from unique combinations of interests
- Multiple passions can provide stability – when one area faces challenges, others can provide fulfillment
- Having diverse interests often leads to innovative solutions and unique perspectives
Balancing Multiple Passions
Of course, pursuing multiple passions comes with its own challenges. Having seen how others successfully manage their diverse interests, let’s explore some practical strategies for nurturing your own multiple passions:
- Rotate your focus: Dedicate different periods of time to different passions
- Look for synergies: Find ways your passions can complement each other
- Accept seasons: Some passions might take center stage at different times in your life and you may leave them for awhile and circle back to them months or even years later
- Create boundaries: Set specific times for different activities to avoid feeling overwhelmed
- Trust your intuition: Let your energy levels guide which passion needs attention
Intentionally Embracing All Your Passions
It took me too long to get to this place, but living intentionally as a multi-passionate means honoring all aspects of who you are.
Make time for various interests and understand that having multiple passions isn’t a sign of being unfocused – it’s a sign of being versatile and complex.
As you become more intentional with your time, you might discover even more interests or find fascinating ways to combine existing ones. The key is not to limit yourself to one passion but to thoughtfully cultivate and integrate your various interests in a way that feels authentic and sustainable for you.
Remember, some of the most innovative solutions and creative breakthroughs come from people who aren’t afraid to explore and combine their multiple passions. Your diverse interests aren’t a liability – they’re a unique strength that can lead to extraordinary contributions to the world.
As you become more intentional with how you spend your free time, you may rediscover old hobbies and find new passions. Without intent, we often let other stuff get in the way and feel we simply don’t have time to indulge in our various interests.
And most of all? Relax. Worrying about how to fit it all in doesn’t help. It only stresses you out. Do what feels right to you in this moment. Life is long enough that you can always change course.
